Macular Degeneration

This is a condition where the central macula area undergoes ageing change so affects patients after the age of 50.

There are two main types: dry and wet.

Dry is where the cells of the macula slowly lose function over time leading to difficulties in vision to read and see faces or watch TV. The wet type is where a sudden change of vision blur or distortion of vision occurs due to the development of a blister of fluid or blood under the macula. There is no active treatment for dry except refinement of glasses and use of optical aids for reading. For wet there are drugs available to treat the blister to help the vision but the treatment is ongoing and the drugs need to be injected into the eye in order to protect the vision.
