Refractive surgery - also known as vision correction - is a procedure undertaken to improve the eyesight. There are two types of refractive surgery - laser eye surgery and lens surgery.

What is refractive surgery?

Refractive eye surgery can allow you to become less reliant on contact lenses or glasses. The type of refractive surgery which you choose is likely to depend on a number of factors - from your eye health and eyesight to your age and lifestyle. Before you decide on which type of refractive eye surgery to undertake, your surgeon will conduct an eye examination and discuss your needs with you.

Laser eye surgery

Laser eye surgery, also known as Laser Vision Correction, uses lasers in the reshaping of the cornea (front surface) of the eyes to improve focus. It can be an effective treatment for long-sightedness, short-sightedness and astigmatism.

The procedure is suitable for almost everyone over the age of 18, ideally with an eye prescription that has stayed the same for around two years. For older people, and those with a high glasses prescription, it may be that lens surgery is more suitable.
