Clinical interests

Mr Patel's specialist interests are in cataract surgery, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and surgery for retinal detachment, macular holes and epiretinal membranes, diabetic related retinal surgery, general eye surgery and conditions of the eyes.

Academic background

Mr Patel qualified from Charing Cross & Westminster Medical School, University of London in 1993 and completed basic ophthalmology training by 1999. He then undertook a 2-year postgraduate research thesis in diabetic retinopathy at the Institute of Ophthalmology, University of London being awarded a Doctorate in Medicine (MD) in 2009 for this research.

He entered higher ophthalmology and subspecialty training in Moorfields Eye Hospital, London in 2002 completing general ophthalmic and specialty interest training with accreditation from the Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board (PMETB) in 2009.

Mr Patel has received extensive training in general ophthalmology including cataract surgery, together with highly specialised training in medical retina and surgical retina at the Royal Perth Hospital, Perth, Australia and Moorfields Eye Hospital, London over a further three year period. This training was particularly for retinal diseases related to age, diabetes and cataract surgery in diabetic patients, retino-vascular occlusive diseases and surgical retinal conditions like retinal detachment and tears, macular holes and membranes and diabetic vitreous haemorrhage.

Diabetic related eye disease has been the topic of extensive lecturing, presentations and publications by Mr Patel.

Mr Patel is also head of the Retinal Research Unit at Colchester Hospital undertaking research trials in collaboration with pharma companies under the guidance of the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) and Comprehensive Local Research Network (CLRN).
